A key element to our BioSphere, our BioActive sand has been "cooked" in our proprietary equipment to cultivate the two key bacteria in the Aquatic Nitrogen Cycle: nitrosomonas and nitrobacter.

Aquatic Nitrogen Cycle:

  • Nitrosomonas convert the Ammonium (NH4+) / Ammonia (NH3+) from animal waste, left-over food decay and plant decay into Nitrites (NO2-).
  • Nitrobacter convert the Nitrites (NO2-) into Nitrates (NO3-).
  • Nitrates are plant fertilizer!  We encourage the use of aquatic plants to naturally manage your Nitrates.  Nitrates are also removed with water changes.
  • See our video about this key element of our BioSpheres.

This quality, natural sand is proven to work well in aquariums.  It does not affect the pH and does not introduce any harmful elements.

We have extensive research "tuning" our BioSpheres (up to 2 Gallons) with multiple African Dwarf Frogs using our BioActive sand to ensure an abundance of bacteria.  We have not found similar research on larger enclosures or with other critters.

THIS IS A LIVE PRODUCT.

Shipping for live product either requires:

  • insulated, express delivery or
  • ground delivery - dependent on the weather (which could be weeks or months)

Included with this order:  (1) 1/2-pound bag of sand to replace sand in the classic size tank.   Sand is shipped ground unless expedited shipping is selected.

Please note:

Our research has tested the bio-active sand up to 1-gallon tank size with African Dwarf Frogs as the only inhabitant.

We offer our BioActive sand for purchase but do not guarantee that your new environment will be able to sustain the filter-less feature of our BioSphere.  The bamboo in the BioSphere is also an important component as it processes the Nitrates as part of the aquatic nitrogen cycle.  You will need to add live, aquatic plants to perform this step.

If you add additional aquatic animals into your new tank, that will also affect the ability of the bio-active sand and plants to stabilize your tank.

For the safety of the frogs (and other possible inhabitants), we generally recommend that you install a traditional tank filter system for your non-BioSphere tank.

When using our bio-active sand outside of our BioSphere, you should test the chemicals (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate) in the tank every two days for at least two weeks.  The chemicals will each spike for a few days as the tank stabilizes.  If after two weeks, the chemicals do not stabilize, you will need to use traditional aquarium practices/products to assist in stabilization.
